It's been years but I got a scope hickey today. I knew better but let it get me anyway. I missed a damn turkey last Sunday morning so decided to put a scope on the SBE. Got the mount and scope in today and in a rush didn't take the proper precautions that I normally take shooting on paper. Anyway, I always start out with field loads to get the pattern in the middle. Then I switch to my hunting load (3 1/2 Hi Vel. Hevi). Well, that did it. After the blood stopped spourting and I could see again, I moved the scope forward another 1/2" and fired it with a pad between the butt and my shoulder, and showed some renewed respect. 3 shots and I was done. I hate shooting turkey loads on paper. The results, other than the impending black eye were rather pleasing though. I hope my misses are a thing of the past for awhile. There's nothing worse than doing everything right on a turkey and not closing the deal.

I don't know if I should say this, but I've never had one, and hope I never do, but I probably just jinxed myself. I don't use a scope on my turkey gun, so I guess I don't have to worry about it for a while, but I do have to worry about shooting those dang 3 1/2" shells again this weekend. I will have to try that sandbag trick.

It's never happened to me either. (knock on wood) Happened to a buddy of mine years ago. He looked like Petey from the Little Rascals for about a week. Did get snotted by my 835 the first time I shot it about ten years ago. Have upgraded to a SBE since. Lot less recoil!!! New to the forum. Enjoying the conversations.

I can't argue with that too much, cause I sure knew it could happen, and has happened before.....and no doubt will happen again sometime. :p

Man, sorry to hear that Multi. Did it just get one eye? Maybe you should try to shoot the other hand until it heals!!!;)

I've been jacked up by my 30.06 before so I feel your pain. I don't shoot a scope on my turkey gun but I'm sure those 3 1/2's will sure do it if I did. I have had my nose busted several times by my thumb while whacking a long beard. I just can't make myself hold the gun tight when I'm looking down the sights at a gobbler.

Scopes work pretty well for turkey guns, except as noted above. They do make you keep you head on the stock and give you a little better look in the early morning hour when it's not real light yet. I've even seen the pro use them on the videos at times. Use what you do best with I guess???

The old ought six whacked me a good one years ago. Did a number on my forehead, good enough that I still remember it 30 some years later! Tom

I had a phy. ed. teacher tell me this story back in grade school. He was out deer hunting during our gun season. Saw a deer, shot at it, and went over to look for blood. Got over to the spot and found some blood and started following it and ended up right back at his tree. Realized that he was the one bleeding from head where the scope had caught him good. Never got the deer either.

Multi, have there been many spots for civilian hunters at Fort Knox so far? I don't remember when it was suppose to open exactly, but I would like to go down and do some bonus hunting. It's a 2 - 2 1/2 hour trip for me, so I don't want to go down if there's only one or two spots. I've hunted turkeys there only once, but didn't see a thing (area 18 believe it or not), but I was still pretty green at the time.

The spots have been few and spotty. Military hunters have been taking almost all of the
Sat. spots, and the Sun. spots have been less than 20 or so. You have to have a damn good draw or it's a wasted trip. Kill outs have been even fewer. So far, they've killed about 30 total, mostly because the military hunters normally don't show up.
