What do you guy think is the junkiest call ever made? Just curious.

Any of those by the Drury Bros. They made a waterproof box call that was waterproof, but you couldn't call anything with it. Their slate aluminum call was about as bad.

I picked up a H.S. Strutt Black Magic  thinking about using as a door stop at work:D

Picked up a Quaker Boy, three in one friction call thing last year, aluminum, slate and glass I believe, all on the same disc. Terrible sound - trying to cram too much into one call I guess. You get a turkey to come to that thing it is probably diseased! One good thing though, the call will fit into my clay pigeon thrower - PULL.

jdixon,
Surprised about your comment on the Quaker Boy. Was it the Triple Threat? If so, I've probably killed 20+ birds with that call in the last 5 years. On windy days the birds love the aluminum sound. It is my go to call.

I'm sure there are some lemons out there. I haven't had one yet. Some sound better to me than others but when I'm in the woods I hear turkeys that don't sound so hot either, bottom line it doesn't matter to me what the call sounds like if it produces turkeys. Heck my finishing call on alot of birds is a $10 mass produced mini slate. 3rd one I've owned. They last about 2 seasons before the striker breaks through the slate while cutting hard and loud to boss hens who won't share their man.

I have had a few that I thought sounded like crap. That is until I hear some of the hens that are walking around make toms go crazy. I have never had a call that I would refuse to use. I do however have some calls that I will use more than others.

OPPS not slate calls but deserve dishonorable mention

#1 that dead silence from Madd Calls..i know why they called it dead silence
#2 had to be that plastic push/pull call that HS Strut put out about 5-8 years ago the action on it sounded squeakier then a mouse caught in a trap..

Use the Rosewood striker with it. If you don't want it I will take it. :D

The absolute worse call I ever had my hands on was one called the Lucky clucker not sure who made it. It was made of wood with a spring loaded striker. Never made it out of the shop, I think the guys wore it out trying to make it sound anything like a turkey and it ended up in the garbage can.

This wasn't a slte, but was the worst call ever.

Made by P.S. Olt and you cranked it.

It did become a collector's item and I sold mine for $150 on eBay.

I also like the Quaker Boy call that had the 3 surfaces. Mine was a Sidewinder GPS or something like that. "Gobbler Positioning System" I haven't had many slate calls, and I try all the calls out before I buy them. I just tried out a bunch of crap last night at Gander Mountain. Don't know if they have just been on display for too long or what, but I didn't like many that I tried.

I bought that same call...it sounded great when I hit it up in the store, then, I bought one, and as soon as I took it out of the package and made the first squeak yes squeak, I knew I was taken. Worst thing I ever heard.

I bought a cherry bomb box call made by mad from gander sounded good on display. So I bought one. Got it home and found out that one of the sides was busted. Took it back, exchanged it for the same one. Got that one home and all I can get out of it is a sqeak. Another 20 wasted

As for worse calls, Way back, Maybe 8 years ago I had an HS Strut call, I can't remember the name. I do remember that the striker was attatched to the call via a nylon cord. Man it sounded crappy.

I have been in the woods when large numbers of turkeys were trying to regroup after being chased. Believe me, you *CAN"T* make a bad turkey sound. I've heard every kind of squeak, squawk, whistle, fart, putt in the whole spectrum of audible sound. I kinda laugh at calling contests. "Yup, thet rite 'air is whut a hen's aposed to sound lak!" If you're throwing a "bad" call away, give it to me...:)

I take my prior comment back. The worst call that I have ever had was the K&H Lonesome Hen. I used it one morning. The volume control on the back messed up causing it to sound like a distressed guinea. I don't even know what I did with it. Then again, I don't care either.:D

I sometimes wonder about the calling I hear on TV shows. I figure if they can sound that bad and still get their bird, it don't matter how bad you call.

The way calls are manufactured in bulk today, you'll have lemons here and there. One of the worst calls I've ever heard of was the MAD whistle. Lots of good calls out there, just have to try them and find one you like.

I agree with chad. Most turkey calls are designed to call in hunters with money. Pretty much any call will work if you know how to use it and you don't use it too much. There are as many hen sounds as there are hens and some of the real hens "sound like crap" too.

vividky did you try roughing the surface a little?Rub it a little with some fine sand paper.

I think the best Slate Call is the Old Yellar!!! I love this call. And I also like the Strikers that you can change the ends by screwing then into the top. They look like part of arrow shafts and are camo! Any suggestions on mouth calls?

150P-

Probably a better question for a different thread.

But since you asked.... Preston Pittman [Black Gold, I think is what it's called] The green latex, think it's a 4 reed. QBoy Screaming Green series.[they make 3 or 4 green latex, think I'm partial to the Raspy Old Hen or something] And Whatever "young sounding" single or double reed is around. I like the green latex for durability and raspiness. The white or clear for higher pitched less raspy sounds works for about 1 week before I blow through it.
