That is a tact used by several state bowhunting organizations.
It's OK for a crossbow to have it's own license and season just NOT in archery season where it belongs.
That happened in Michigan a few years back. The crossbow was OKd and then the bowhunter groups went to work to get it placed in FIREARM SEASON. The MDNR obliged and gave the kiss of death to crossbowing - at least for now.
I'm dealing with that in Indiana right now. The leaders of two of the most vocal deer hunting/bowhunting groups wants me to "work with them" to get a "crossbow license".
I really don’t have a problem with that but when I asked them "what season would your two groups campaign to have the crossbow put into" they are suddenly hush mouthed. They want me to sign a blank contract which they will fill in later. I was born at night, but not last night.
They want a "crossbow lo license" so they can say - "It's a different hunting tool and belongs in late archery (where it is now) and/or firearm season".
They want to give it the Michigan kiss of death too.
Not very honest, eh?

Personally, even though I wouldn't support it unless several other changes also occurred, I would like to see a crossbow license of some sort to have a better accounting of what we do with it. But it won't happen, because we don't have weapon specific tags here, like other states do.
