Haven't really been looking yet, but I may start after this rain. Last year was my first year hunting them, so I'm still green as a goard. I do have some new places to look this year that I have heard really produced well in years past. Will keep everyone notified of my findings.

as kids we always found them at the end of march. lots were already dried up by mid to late april. varies though. seems to have been a little cooler this year to me. may delay the process in some places. ;)

I know this question has been asked a million times, but where is the best place to find them? I have eaten them before and loved them. I would love to find some on my own but I don't have any idea where to start looking.

I look for old fruit trees as a place to start. Then I seek out dead elm trees. I'll make a couple of concentric circles around such spots. Otherwise, its just a walk in the woods. I have found morels in just about every situation you could describe. One of my favorite early spots in southern Indiana is ... a gravel road. They grow right up through the gravel. In the middle, in the ruts, on the sides. There's none of the "expert's" reasons for morels to be growing there. I was driving down the road with my brother telling him I couldn't find any mushrooms in my favorite spots. He said "Hell! They're growing on my road. There's a big one right now!" Sure enough, he pointed out a nice 4 inch tall yellow morel on the side of the road. I've been picking them off that gravel road for ten years now. I've only shown one spot to a fellow hunter. It was on public land. I told him it was his spot, I wouldn't ever be back. He gets a few there every spring...

Oh, I forgot. You can track the progress of morel sightings across the US at morelmania.com---He keeps a running state by state update of mushroom sightings. It includes links, tips, etc

another good place is on damp hillsides and in damp hollows around poplar timber.

I used to try and follow other people's advice on where to find them, like under what kind of trees and on certain north/south/east/west facing slopes. After being only marginally successful, I just started looking where ever. I now have several places where I find them yearly. My best spot here on the farm behind the house, has alot of hickory trees. I'm not saying to hunt in a hickory grove, but it works on THIS farm. I also find them in an old cemetary on Mammoth Cave Nat Park, kinda makes you wonder what's pushin them up :-)
I usually don't start finding them till the first week of april, but it looks like Kycurhunter is finding them already and he's in my county. I guess I gotta go fish huntin today.

Most people wont believe this, but last year in Feb.. we had about 1 1/2 inches of snow on and as it started to melt a friend of mine found about 22 mushrooms in a yard in front of a church. He came and got me too go with him as a witness, I couldnt believe it.

The only thing I use to hunt morels is a stealthy approach. Well, I do use a decoy morel on the end of my walking stick. As I wander the woods, the mushrooms that are hiding in the leaf litter on the forest floor see my decoy go by. They sometimes poke their heads up to see how that mushroom has suddenly become so mobile, then I pounce on 'em. You almost *HAVE* to have a stick. Whether its a dedicated walking stick or just a good one found upon entering the search area. You run into all kinds of critters while hunting mushrooms, snakes, spider webs, etc. If you're silly enough to take a person with you and you find a good spot, a stout stick helps to knock them unconscious. That way, you can drag 'em far enough away from the spot before you leave them...

If you find a truck parked and are sure they are hunting shrooms, what you need to do is let the air out of two of there tires. They will just cuss and put there shrooms in the back of there truck and go off to get help, you have to be fast that is when you grab there shrooms before the elk can get to them. I new a man that found a big pach of shrooms and got into a big fight with one of those elks over it the elk got most of the shrooms his walking stick did not help him a lot. The elk had three walking sticks in his horns from fights before. So when you go shroom hunting you might wont to take a Xbow for self protection.

we were up in Iowa (where mushrooms are SERIOUS BUSINESS) last spring turkey hunting, and we walked into a local watering hole to eat a little lunch. must have been 50-75 people in there. We were all wearing our camo and had obviously been hunting. One of the local guys spoke up when we walked in as to inquire as to whether or not we were after turkeys... and one of my buddies replied, jokingly, "nope, this is what we wear when we sneak onto peoples farms to pick thier mushrooms".

The bar went silent, you could here a pin drop as everyone stared in our direction. you could tell they were searing the image of our faces in thier minds for future reference. My buddy, who is from up there, quickly spoke up to say that we were indeed turkey hunting, and had done quite well that morning, and that we had picked no mushrooms, nor would we. (we had a sack full out in the truck).

needless to say, we ate quickly and got the hell out of dodge that day, and spent very little time in that bar the rest of trip.

i ALWAYS carry my crossbow for protection. some people think they are like a magic weapon. just point and shoot and things fall dead.

i have never heard so many grown men cry like babies in my life.

some of them have NO problem using a scoped inline. whats the diff. a scoped inline is no more sporting than a crossbow in bow season....

whaaaaaaaaa whaaaaaaaaaaa whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa:cool:

Thought I'd drop in and see if anyone was morel hunting and how they were doing.Morels are big stuff here in northern Michigan. As far as them growing in gravel rds. and such is because the ground has been disturbed(mycilium is injured causing a fruiting). If you guys are looking for a site that has a lot of info and some of the most knowlegdable shroom hunters try....Michigan Morels.com,go over the post and links for the types of trees, ground temps and such.In 2003 we got over 600 in a morning hunt and another 400+ in the afternoon....good luck and good pickin to all..........Gary

Found the first of the year this afternoon right across the road. Going to try again tomorrow evening, hopefully I will have some pics to share.

Lab, no pics of any shrooms on the ground, but I have found them in several different areas from yards(with some overhead tree cover) creek banks, hardwoods, even under some cedar trees. About the only advice I can give ya is just get out and look. I would think they are really getting ready to turn on.

Redbuds are out. So too should Morrels. If I go listen this weekend I'll check the spots usually productive for me. Best day last year was 1 longbeard and about 100 tasty shrooms:D Had to shoot that bird, he was standing in the morrel patch!

Went Sunday to the only spot on my place that produces and didn't find any.......... Hopefully this rain and the warm weather will pop them up. Its funny some years they are there and some they aren't. too sporadic to put a pattern together.

Found one nice patch this morning. I had found and picked 3 there last weekend, along with a few more in another patch. There was 15 there this morning, which leads me to believe the other patch I found last weekend will have several up now as well. Going back in this evening to pick them, and roost turkeys.

I found 4 this evening and my brother found 4 also, but he had a hole in his bag and lost one, so I ended up with 7 mushrooms altogether.
