OK, strarted a thread earlier about the fact that we are lookin to start a food plot this year. Problem is, we don't have any farm equipment to use. The plot won't be very big at all, maybe 20 x 35, but our huntin area is only 32+ acres. The plot will lie more or less right in the center of the property.
So anyway, we pretty much have a good plan to get the ground worked up. It's gonna be a ton of work, but it'll be worth it, we know. The plot we're lookin at is an old tobacco bed, and we actually got it plowed.

My big question is: once we get the seed spread, how can we get it in the ground properly without the use of any farm equipment? Any ideas?

Setting the seed is the easy part. Simply running over it with an atv will work. Tracking in with a dozer is great. The hard work is preparing the soil before you throw on the seed.

A seeded plot 20' x 35'. Ten minutes with a hand rake and your done.
If ground has been turned with a plow, probably need to run a disc or rototiller thru it first.

Yeah we had planned to rototill it thoroughly and then spread the seed... just wasn't real sure if we could do any good by raking the seed into the soil or not. I guess we'll give it a try.

What would be the best spray to apply to kill out all the grass, etc. before we seed?

Roundup kills almost everything. I walk around and manually plant all extra seeds I have left from the garden. Doesn't work great, but it's better than throwing the seeds away. Plus I also plant about 100 green bean plants around my place. They eat them, but like the leaves too.

Sorry I didn't clarify that it's actually 20 yards x 35 yards. After another review this weekend, it's probably closer to 30 yards x 50 yards.
