Clay Smitson, a private land biologist, stopped by the farm to talk about some work I'm doing on my farm. He was in the area trying to catch a black bear and re-locate it. He has one of the culvert traps and a pile of vanilla wafers on a farm in Boone Co. The bear sleep out the winter in the area.
Last year, a bear was struck by a car on Weaver Road in Florence.
In Ohio, a radio collared bear traveled from around Athens and made it all the way to the edge of Cincinnati. He must not have liked what he saw because he turned around and headed back home.

Being a Union resident also,I saw what was probably the same bear that was hit on Weaver road last year.I was coming home from work at 1 a.m. and a bear crossed the road on Industrial by the train trestle. Not that it matters or anyone cares, just thought I would share. That was an eye opener.

The one I saw was the night before the bear got hit on Weaver rd. It was headed south so that would put it in behind 84 lumber and wiseway where Weaver meets rt.25. It was something to see, that`s for sure. It was a fairly large bear. Remember the newspaper report of the bear in Bigbone a few years back? Used to work with a guy from Sparta who swore his coon dogs got tore up from a bear. There may be more around than we realize.

A guy hit and killed a great big bear (over 380 pounds) in McCreary County back in the fall. It was killed on highway 27 right near the Stearns district U.S. Forest service office. There was a picture of it on the front page of the paper. I think they are having it mounted and are going to display it at that office.

I'm surprised he wasn't charged with vehicular bearslaughter:)

Yeah, know what you mean. Don't have a clue why they keep trying to downplay the fact that bears are back in Kentucky and have been for a while. Big Deal.
I own a farm in southern Boone county, on mudlick road. My neighbors a Vet with a huge farm. He has been there since the 60's I think I will ask him about it. I have heard rumors of bears in the county but I have never seen any evidence of them. I have vacationed in the Rockies all my live and have been to close for comfort with bears many times, once about 35 feet from a grizz. There still are places in my part of the county that would be considered uninhabitated, so I would say that it is possible for a few bears I guess. Keep us posted if you hear anything else.

I leased a farm in 2000 in Bracken county and saw a set of bear tracks by a creek that ran through the place while I was up there scouting for deer season.. I live a couple miles from Butler in Pendleton county and was told by someone last week that their father-in-law saw a bear standing on its hind legs in a field right along the river between Butler and US 27. Thats a little too close to home for me this close to turkey season, I don't want to encounter one.

I'm in Pendleton Cty near Lenoxburg and my dad told me last year that he thought he caught a glimpse of a bear back on our place. At the time I just thought his old eyes were playing a trick on him or something but now after hearing of all these sightings maybe he really did see one.

Kyfried, I hunt west of Brooksville. We heard about the same thing.
One was supposedly seen east of our location.
That would near there. We hunted a farm years ago just outside of Lenoxburg, I could see how a bear could be lost in those hollows.
