The story I am about to put down is true, I know this because it happened to me on a fall bear hunt in Manitoba.

We were seeing as many moose as bears from the stand and made the comment to the outfitter they were cool to see but it seemed they spooked the bears off the area of the bait when they travel thru. One of out guides was a young Cree indian named Leo. He came to our cabin one afternoon with a friend and ask if we would like to shoot a moose. Moose season was open at the time but none there had a tag. He said you don't need no tag, being I am the provider for my clan I can kill game year round and we can just claim I shot the moose. We started to worry about this fellow at that time but started to ask some questions on how he moose hunted. His answer was simple..... We will go up to the fire tower north of town, the moose live in a big swamp about a 1000 yards away. I will call the moose so he gets mad as hell, then when the moose shows up to whip my ass my buddy will put the light on him and you shoot. Needless to say we all thought better of that idea and didn't go moose hunting with Leo.

I believe it. The natives get away with murder.

Hammer he said he shot 10 whitetail deer ( they call them jumpers ) a month and at least one moose ( moosewalk ) a month. Plus they ran fishing nets in the lakes all summer. He told of netting over 400 lb of walleye in one day. You have to kinda feel sorry for those indian's tho. They live in what we would call shacks, drive old and I mean old vehicles. Live hand to mouth most of the time. That is unless they have a casino run by the tribe....LOL.

I hunted in Manitoba in 04, right on the border of Riding Mountain National park. We didn't actually see a lot of natives(except in the bars ;) ) our outfitter mentioned them a time or two. He said they would cross his land and hunt on the park. It bothered him because of the snow and the fact that the game wardens could track them back to his land and he was afraid he would get accused of tresspassing. But as you say, they do have free reign as far as game goes, but that is about all they have. Manitoba is a beautiful province.
