Does Anyone know a good location for backwoods tent camping in LBL?
It does'nt have to be "miles from anything" just not in a campground.
Would like to be lakeside for fishing. But secluded from other campers.
Any tips would be great, I have been to LBL 3-4 times but don't know it all
that well.
I feel the same way when I go there. Most of the places I've found over the years that are "lakeside" and secluded and seldom used.....are rough to get to. Most times I have just drove around until I found a spot and settled for close to lakeside. Take a look at the map and just drive till you find a clear spot....believe me there are tons of em. And if you get interested in following the dotted lines to the lake.....take the 4x4.

JP is right, there are tons of places but most of those that are lakeside and accessible you have to be there on Tuesday to get a place for the weekend. IMO there seem to be more on the southern part of the Barkley side than in Kentucky, but still the 4 x4 is usually a good idea.

we go ther hunting in the fall and have been for a long time. if you want back woods camping you can go just about anywhere there isnt a tent. we went down rd 141 and found several nice little spots. but they are not lakeside. there is a bay at the end of the road but i dont know how far doown the road it was. we now stay in campers at wranglers when we go. gess it is the age thing or maybe were just lazy.

If you go in seed tick season, make sure you use permanone. Otherwise you'll be sorry for several weeks after.

I noticed that few of you mentioned 4x4s are you refering to an atv or truck. I own an atv, but am haven't been able to find somewhere you can take it to get away from everyone and camp. Any help would be appreciated.
I believe you can do it in lbl's turkey bay.You will have to check with them for sure but I use to do it all the time.I had to buy a camping permit at turkey bay.Turkey bay is the only place you can ride an atv on lbl and you will have to buy a permit for that too.

gung is right, don't get caught riding an atv anywhere but in Turkey Bay... big no no.
Bacon Creek is a campground but it is small and normally not crowded. There is a road to the left before you get to the campground that winds back down along the lake that should be accessible without being in a 4x4 but the water is pretty shallow through that stretch on the main lake.
I agree, most of the backcountry areas that would have lake frontage.. you're going to need a 4x4.... especially if you want to get away from anyone else.
Cravens Bay campground is pretty nice, and actually split up into a front area in the bay and a back area on the main lake. For whatever reason, everybody stays up front in the bay side normally. The lake side is probably 1/4 mile or better further on through the woods.

The "ONLY" place you can legally camp in Turkey Bay Off Highway Vehicle Area is the Camping Area. Camping Fee is $8 per night. No backcountry camping is allowed in Turkey Bay OHV Area.
You must buy a OHV Permit for your ATV. No person under the age 16 may operate an ATV with an engine exceeding 90cc displacement and nobody under 12 may operate an ATV with an engine exceeding 70cc. (Ky State Law 189.515)
Riding is only allowed from sunrise to sunset.
You can pick up a copy of the rules at any LBL Welcome Station.
