That stuff will take over if not burned off. Almost as bad as broomsage.

Probably native warm season grass whuch requires fire to spread or an area being ridded of fescue. Fire is a GOOD thing.

I don't know what happened at Peabody but they are going to start doing controled burns at LBL this year.

That is a very good and positive step too! About time the national forests get controlled by professional forest managers and not by tree hungers.

If you want to see habitat for small game flourish a match is a great way. A little late to burn IMO but still a good thing. Turkeys will be all over the fresh greens come May.

I agree 100% but I found out they will not be able to burn as much as they wanted. Last year at the meetings with LBL they brought it up as one of the things they wanted to do at LBL but their report says they will only be able to burn half the area they first wanted. The tree hungers got to them.

I got a copy of the LBL plan, read part of it. Is there a chance they will get to manage the other 1/2 you spoke of?
The DBNF plan passed this past year, it too is better than what we had, but a lot of ground was also "lost"?

You never know. LBL's plan might change after just 4 or 5 years. That plan that passed was not the one I wanted but we'll see how much they stick to it.

Fort Campbell does alot of burns. The turkeys really thrive there. The turkeys love to feed in the burns when the new growth starts.

They did some burns on one of the Indiana fish & Wildlife area I use to hunt at. It was not long after they started allowing turkey hunting there. The turkeys seem to love those new green areas when the spring green up came. Gives poults a lot of bugs to eat after hatching. Sure made for some interesting hunting the first year, you could see toms strutting out in those burned areas but with no cover they were hard to get close to to work them.

Burning sericea now breaks some of the dormancy of the seed bank, encouraging it to germinate...thus resulting in more kill when it is sprayed. Burning now also helps remove some woody species.
