No it is not legal to have traps and snares set out of season. It ended on the 28th of Feb. You can shoot coyotes year round. A trap is non-selective and will catch anything that steps in it.

No I'm not w/ F&G. I'm just reading the rules as they are written in the guide.
If it is legal??? I wouldn't want to be catching fox, coons & bobcat out of season and having to deal w/ them.
If I interpret the law correctly, and if I don't I'm sure I will be corrected. Coyotes are classified as furbearers. But the hunting and trapping season are year round. So i believe my snares are ok. I really would like to hear from a C.O.

To my knowledge you can only trap during trapping season. Are you finding literature or regulations that say otherwise?

I just went to the KDFW site and the guide does indeed state "hunting and trapping for yotes is year-round". IMHO if they are causing damage I can see snaring them but just for fun I believe is unethical. Deer fawns and mommy bobcats are running around in the woods too.

COYOTE
The hunting and trapping season on coyotes is open year round with no bag limit. Special requirements apply during deer gun season. See Year-Round Hunting Section for details.

No, that was my 1st ref. I went to KDFWR home, then HUNTING, then Guides and Pubs., then 2004-5 Hunting & trapping Guide, Section 2 and down near the bottom I found:
C&P-------------------------------------
Bobcat hunting and trapping is also permitted at Land Between the Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area; for specific requirements and season dates contact: LBL, Golden Pond, KY 42231; phone (270) 924-2065.

BUYING AND SELLING FURS & HIDES
The raw furs of furbearers may be held by a trapper or hunter for 20 days and by a fur buyer for 30 days after the season closes.
Unethical but it's there.

Thanks for pointing this out. I wasn't realizing it was being worded that way.
301 KAR 2:251. Hunting and trapping seasons and limits for furbearers and small game.
RELATES TO: KRS 150.025(1), 150.340, 150.370(1), 150.399, 150.400, 150.410, 150.990
STATUTORY AUTHORITY: KRS 150.025(1)
NECESSITY, FUNCTION, AND CONFORMITY: KRS 150.025(1) authorizes the department to establish hunting seasons and to regulate bag and possession limits, the methods of taking and the devices used to take wildlife. This administrative regulation is necessary to insure the permanent and continued supply of small game and furbearer species by protecting them from overharvest.
(4) "Furbearers" mean mink, muskrat, beaver, raccoon, opossum, gray fox, red fox, weasels, river otter, bobcat, coyote and striped skunk.
Section 6. Shooting Hours. A person shall not take small game or furbearers by hunting except during the times specified in this section.
(1) Small game or furbearers, except opossum and raccoon: daylight hours only.
I read this that yotes can not be shot at night.
************************************************** *******
Section 2. Hunting and Trapping Seasons. Except as specified in 301 KAR 2:049 or 301 KAR 2:125, a person shall not take the following wildlife except during the dates specified in this section:
(4) Furbearers, hunting and trapping.
(c) Coyote: year round.
I read this that coyote hunting is allowed during deer season with OR without a deer tag. The Hunting Guide says that only "Legal" deer hunters may take coyotes, but this law does not stipulate that!?
Any help here????

If it's legal, how do you think it's un-ethical??? Seems that the law needs to be addressed concerning year round trapping, which I believe is what the gents are asking for? The fact that the pelt on a varmit may not be good to sell is not relevant in my opinion. When the pelt is prime, then they can be considered a furbearer, at all other times they are varmints and open to being killed any way you can.
Summery--either remove the year round trapping part of it, or let you hunt yotes at night to be consistant with the other regs.
