are you lookin for a pay lake or just a place to fish free where you might catch a couple? Are you fishin for fun, or to eat? If for fun, the ohio river is hard to beat.

Gilbert's lake is good fishing. I slayed them there summer before last. Its over towards Maryville but I think its actually in Jefferson Co. Childer's pay lake is right down the street from it and they have 3 lakes but he spreads them out to thin in the 3 lakes and its hard to do any good. I'd hit Gilbert's if I was you.

i recently saw in Ky Game& Fish that Elmer Davis is considered "THE" top catfish lake in the state located in OWEN COUNTY
i have bassed fished E.D. and have caught cats on lures there..
so i would say give this lake a good look into...it has 2 ramps
1-state free
2-private $2 per launch

I dont like the dough type baits cause I cant keep it on a hook. I use vanilla/chicken breast, kool-aid /chicken breast, bluegill and crawfish. I've had my best look at the pay lakes with shrimp, they tear it up.

I'm not much on fishing, but I do like to catfish. Years ago I had a summer job cooking at a resort. I'd trim meat and use the steak fat & trim as bait. WoW, I hooked big cats every cast. I hated leaving that job,.... Stinks to have to start a career. I got paid to fish!

I know a little trick when it comes to fishing pay lakes. Take an empty onion bag, or potato bag, and fill it 3/4 of th way with some big dry dog food (so it doesn't go through th holes). Next put a rock,(or 1/2 a brick) in the bag and tie it up good. Get to the lake early (when there aren't that many people around) and toss it in about 10-12 feet in front of you. Cast right around where you threw it in and you should be catching them one right after another, when the dog food starts getting soggy and breaking up. There is a guy that used to do this and actually had enough catfish that he used to sell it! He was actually making money fishing for catfish! I wish I had the time to do that.

Best baits - beef spleen & mussel meat.
Beef spleen stays on the hook really well. Was hard to access where I was from but a friend's dad had a slaughter house and could get it. Of course I am taking his word for it that it was spleen.
Father in law used to gather mussels some and it was incredible bait. Slimy and smell stayed with you a little bit, but the cats loved it.

I fish the paylakes alot. I have found that nothing works better than the Catalpa worms. Many times I have caught my limit within minutes. Catalpa worms are great for channels and blues. However if you are fishing for the flatheads (my favorite) nothing tops the minnows or bluegill. Often paylakes will not allow live bluegill. If thats the case I will use big shinner minnows. I like to cut off the heads and tails. I place the hook straight thru the main belly vain. This covers the hook and makes a tasty treat for the big ol' flats. I fish with a lot of guys that use a variety of bait; WD-40 soaked nightcrawlers, crow guts, leaches, spearmint chewing gum w/ chicken livers, and tobacco worms. If any of you guys live near the Lake Barkley dam give me holler. I know a lady that sales some awesome doughbait. It's real close the the "Pelican".
I'd rather be huntin....

Ever hear of Hamburger bait ? This works well in still water such as pay lakes IF you can use a treble hook. If trebles are not allowed try a single hook with a small spring from a ball point pen fitted over the shank of the hook.
One lb of hamburger
one small box of velveta cheese
one medium box of parmesan cheese
Put all in large bowl, mix this all till you acheve a tacky mixture and the burger an both cheese's are mixed well. Add plain flower or white cornmeal to toughen up the mixture. Place in fridge overnight to set. One ball marble size on a # 8 or 10 treble either on bottom or under float will last 10 to 15 minutes before disolveing and you will need to rebait. Longer if fished on bottom where you don't have movement. YOU MUST keep this bait cold while fishing, I keep mine in a zip loc bag on ice in a small cooler when on the water.
