This article says the vitals of a turkey are the size of a softball.

That's very wrong. The body cavity may be that big, but only a heart or lung shot will put the bird down quickly.

Now you are talking about the size of a tennis ball.

A gut shot turkey takes a while to die. They are still able to run or fly or both. They don't leave a blood trail, and they crawl up under or in thick stuff when they're hurt.

The odds of recovering a wounded turkey are almost nil.

I bowhunt turkeys, and I've gone to aiming for the neck, just like with a shotgun. Yes, it's a hard target to hit BUT (and this is important) a hit drops the bird right now, and a miss is almost always absolutely clean.

Something to think about.
