We always take a canoe trip the weekend before Easter Sunday, and this year will be no different than previous years, we always put our canoes in at the Shopville/Stab Fire Department and take either 1 or sometimes 2 days to float down Buck Creek about a mile past the bridge on Hwy 192.
One of my best memories is of last year when we fried walleye fillets and cooked pinto beans with some homemade cornbread all fixed on the creek bank. Mmmm Mmmmmm
one of the best meals that I've ever had.

Looks like this year we'll be eatin tenderloins and backstraps,(no walleye) along with my infamous pork and beans and weiners cut up in them all heated up on the coleman stove, and maybe some homemade brownies.

Ohh yeah, one word of advice NEVER and I mean NEVER
ride with a drinking man in a canoe!!!!!
Danged fool almost killed me twice and once was when he was standing up in the canoe reaching towards the middle where his cooler was, while we were in some small rapids.

this is probably the best advice that I will ever give.

you wouldn't believe the laughs and giggles we have while discussing that movie "Deliverance"
mostly about what were gonna do iffen we hears dat duelin banjo, while on the creek bank,or someone say
"Squeal like a pig boy" or "you shore does got a purty mouth"

that movie has been brought up every canoe trip that I have ever been on, and I'm sure this one will be no different.

jblack, we also fix up the beans and wieners, but we make sure and give the pot a few good shots of ketchup and mustard while it's heating. Makes it better, or we think so. Chopped onions add to it, too.

Eating on the river bank makes food better. Maybe it's the sand and bugs that add flavor, I don't know.

Ditto on the drunk canoe partner. Beer seems to taste so good on the river, and the sun is so hot, and it's not like I'm driving or anything...and before you know it you're a half case down and blathering like an idiot and standing up in the canoe and casting in the treetops and acting like an idiot in general. When you're miles from the nearest phone or road, that's no time to act stupid and hurt yourself or somebody else. Since the wife and kids came along, beer is a thing of the past. On the river or elsewhere. I guess I just grew up.

Hope the water and weather are just right for your trip. Good luck and good fishin'.

well we went and ate and ate and ate some more.
Friday night's menu was fried trout fillets, fried cornbread, and pinto beans.

Saturday Morning's menu was homemade gravy, fried biscuits, sausage, bacon, and eggs.

Saturday's menu was grilled burgers, with tater chips.
we never got to fix supper Saturday night, we were too full from the burgers.

Sunday morning's menu was Deer Tenderloin, fried biscuits and scrambled eggs, and some fried tater's

ya know I have come to the conclusion that the only reason we go on this yearly canoe trip is just to eat, and we do that real well, heck we brought back lot's of food that we never opened or got to fix.
heck, I took a 3lb. canned ham to fry for breakfast and we never got to it.
whewww!! good thing too, I am still sick of eating all that fried food.

JBlack, I'm glad the weather was good. Type us a narrative and let us know all the fun you had, not just the menu. Sounds like it went just fine.

that's my main point, and we had alot of fun to boot, but the food was excellent,
and like I said before I sometimes wonder if the food is the only reason that we take the yearly spring trip,
but we did have a good time, just us guys and mother nature in some of our finest moments.

Sounds like a great trip. Your story brought me back to the trips I have taken and solitified the need for yet another.

Anybody here familiar with the Cave Run area? I have read it is considered the Muskie Capital of the South. Can a guy rent a cabin and a boat in the area?

We tried Buck Creek from 461 to Shopville-Stab Fire Department a few years back and learned a valuable lesson...ALWAYS..be sure of your water flow. We spent about 2/3's of the time dragging the canoes :) Lower Buck Creek is fun as you say, but don't try the upper part when the water is down.

I'm putting together a 2-day trip on the Rockcastle this summer for a bunch of kids, looking forward to that one.

We also do Cumberland tailwaters a lot from the dam to Rockhouse and on to Winfrey's landing.

I just bought "A Canoeing and Kayaking Guide to Kentucky" by Sehlinger and Molloy and am looking forward to trying some new creeks and rivers. Can anybody tell me anything about canoeing Rock Creek?

Hey Bowcrazy, where did you find that book? Sounds like one that needs to be in my bookcase. I used to work summers with an old codger that grew up on the Rockcastle during WWII; he told me all about it, and he wanted to take me there. Sadly, he's gone now. I'll make that trip for him.

i dont think i will ever ride in a canoe. when we had the '97 flood my uncle and two buddys that we considered family where out on a canoe. one of the guys stood up and it fliped. the two guys where brothers. benny and tommy lahnam. they died along with the female black lab. it was tommys fault i think for standing up but i dont think i could get one a canoe after that.:(

Turkeyhunter, if you tried it once, you'd be OK with it. First off, standing up is just asking for a dunking, and not wearing a vest is asking for worse. You have to use common sense and take safety precautions, whether it is boating or driving a car, or whatever. Canoes are different from other boats, in that you can glide along with little effort and skim through on just an inch or two of water. Rough water is usually no problem as long as you take it head on and not sideways. When you're done, you can balance the thing on your head and carry it with no problem. I use john boats, and I fish out of huge Nitros with 200 hp Mercs, and they're all great, but canoeing is the essence of being on the water for me.

When I feel up to typing sometime, I will tell you all about the trips we used to take to the Okeefenokee swamps when I was younger. Great canoe trips. and you wouldn't even guess it was Florida. I agree that the canoe is the way to go. It lets you enjoy the time without rush, and also helps to remind you that you still have a lot of livin' to do.

I just bought "A Canoeing and Kayaking Guide to Kentucky" by Sehlinger and Molloy

I have one by Sehlinger that was copywrited in '76. I used to do a lot of whitewater canoeing back in the 80's and a copy of this book was a must.

exactly the way I feel about it also,
just the peace and quiet is what it's all about, and the company of friends.
