Yesterday the Commission voted to remove bag limits on coons. I'm surprised that has not showed up here yet. There was a recommendation to open coon season on October 1st. After some discussion, the vote was to remove bag limits.

Why in the world would they do something like that?.....That would mean that the coons would all be thinned out. Something that they ought to get of are coyotes and skunks. Where I live, those things are literally EVERYWHERE!!!

im surprised at that change however i dont think many folks would take alot of coons unless the fur market had a big increase ..

.....or unless they were trying to maximize quail or turkey production.

Coons ar everywhere too. It would be next to impossible to get rid of them in any big way usless the pelts go to the price they where when raccon coats and davy crockett were big in the 50's-60's.
trust me

Since fur prices crashed 10 or 20 years ago, coon haved been going wild. The hound crowd takes a few, but not enough. Since trapping is practically a thing of the past, coon, possum and skunk are thicker than ever. They won't be hurt any by no bag limits.
As for coyote, I would think a bounty system might keep them under a little more control. For a few bucks, I might be interested in taking one out, but that's just the greed in me speaking.

The one way to absolutely gaurantee yourself an abundance of coyotes is to do everything in your power to eradicate them.

You are right. I stand corrected. They won't completey get rid of them, but they sure give them a good kick in the head.
A K9 distemper outbreak will do the best temporary job. Of course that takes out coons and gray fox as well.

To do away with bag limits is crazy. There are a ton of coon in the central part of the state. Unfortunatley, coon are NOT plentiful throughout the state. If anyone doesn't believe me, bring your hound and we'll go hunting.

Nathan, the coon here in the central part are not as plentiful as you might think. I would say there is a few more than down there in the mountains, but we are not blessed with a bumper crop of coon.
IMO the bag limit thing is an attempt to cause our own downfall. If we kill the coons to a point where the hunting is less than enjoyable, then we will quit.
Turkey hunters complain that the coon the eat eggs, hah. The turkey seem to be doin' fine. Me & a buddy traveled from Marion county through Casey to Stanford a couple of weeks ago and we counted OVER 400 turkey in the fields along the road. We saw more, but quit counting after 400.
As for the coon, 75% of the coon are in places we can't hunt, like posted land, subdivisions, & right in the middle of towns. We can't control what we can't hunt.

You make some extremely good points. What few places we hunt up north are good spots, but a dog has almost NO room to mess up and get out of pocket. I wish I knew where some good honey holes were, I got a young Wipeout thats chompin' at the bits haha.
