Let's here the story of that bird that u did everything perfect, but he got away from the clutches of death. You know the bird, the one u think about every spring that u would like a do over! Well, mine is..... A bird at the Vogue track of Peabody back in the spring of 03! That bird should hang his head ever nite, knowing that he got thumped but lives anyway. He shoulda took the load in the head and gone on to turkey heaven like all self respecting dead turkeys have in the past. To make a long story short, i figured this bird 2b quite the silent type until he reached his perfered strutt, or perhaps more accurately, meeting zone! I figured by his actions of the past few days that he disdained roost gobbling in favor of simply showing up at a spot that worked in the past. So i planned to show up at this spot in the morning and not make a single locator call. I didn't want him to know i even existed. So showed up i did, but by good daylite, nary a peep did i hear. But i could hear a tom just a hammering about 1/2 miles away. As daylight gathered strength, i eased away perhaps 100yds, thinkin that i had figured wrong and easin towards the truck to go after the one i heard far off. That's when i heard....quite simply... a fuff.fuff.fuff.fuff. Then silence! Ah..Oh! There he was all the time, within 50yds of where i awaited first lite! So i scurried back to a spot and soon as i sat down there he was, neck & head a pumpin. Whoops, he slamed on the brakes, giving me a 25yd shot that sailed to god knows where! He has spied my hulkin form and stopped just long enuf to fire.........and i missed....... i choked!!!!! Man-o-man, just give me that shot back!!!!!!!!!!!

If everyone admits to only one bird that whooped them, this thread will still get longer then the crossbow debate thread. I'll have to think about what one whooped me the best and get back to you.

I hear that, I've got more whoopin' experiences than success stories, by far! :D

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I would have to say tho bird that somehow kept walking after an 8 yards shot. It was the year before last. I was hunting on the proprty that i now own next to the one i lease. My dad and i had been hearing this bird before light, and knew exactly where he was. We setup and called a few times, then shutup. We gave him an hour until we got fed up. We walked up the ridge he was on and got closer. We called once, with no answer. 5 minuets later, we heard a gobble within 100 yards of us. We got setup, then i heard him fly down. I saw the bird coming through the woods and got ready. When i saw him (at 20 yards) he was strutting with brush in the way. He got out of strut and started walking towards me. I couldnt move my gun barrel, so i had to wait until he dropped down into a ditch to move my gun. When he came out of the ditch, he was 8 yards away, and i shot. I rolled him, but he got up and flew off. I saw another gobbler up on the hill 20 yards away and shot at him, but the same thing happened. If i only had another chance at that bird...

I had a double whuppin' put on me one day last year. I'd been calling for others the first week of the season and finally had a chance to hunt on my own. I was hunting on a huge (10,000 acres) private spread down near Bernheim. I hunted solo, and two others hunted together. A huge storm had passed through the night before, so I wasn't expecting to hear much. Before dawn, I set up over a field I had neither hunted before nor even scouted. I heard two birds gobble, both from several hundred yards away. While one never responded to my calls (probably too far w/ the wind), the other did. Unfortunately, both birds flew down and moved away from me. After waiting for about 45 minutes, I decided to move toward the one that did respond. I went close to the area where he roosted, set up, and called. No response. I moved a few hundred yards in the direction he was headed and called again. No response. Moved another 50 yards to a good bench, and cut aggressively. Three diff't gobblers jumped all over it. Two together and one to my left. I kept up the banter for about 20 seconds and then shut up. All 3 moved in and I thought the 2 together in front would get there first. I placed my decoy behind me and set up for them. Well, the one to my left got there in no time, but, being a lefty, I had no shot, and he moved behind me to the deke. He was 10 yards away - drummin', struttin' and gobblin' for 5 minutes b/4 the other 2 birds came in. The first (2 yr old w/ 8" beard) came running right in. The boss walked in behind him strutting the whole time. I was all set to go. A small tree was directly b/t me and the bird so I leaned ever so slightly to my left to get a shot. PUTTT!!!! All three immediately turned away. I took a head shot at 40 yards on the big ol' boss, but missed cleanly. Cursing my luck and disgusted for moving instead of waiting. I left my deke w/ some other gear and struck out in the entire other direction. After fielding multiple calls from my buddies who heard the shot and gave me a hard time, I started hunting in earnest for a new bird. I eventually used a crow call to locate another tom and managed to move up above him on a knob. He hammered my calls like crazy, but the logging operations had left too many dead trees for him to make an easy appearance. After 3 diff't 10 yard moves to get in position to shoot in the place where I knew he was going to appear. He finally popped up in the spot I originally had anticipated. I could see parts of him through the deadfall but had no open shot. I finally decided that I could get a clean look at his head when he walked to the base of the downed tree he was behind. When his head popped free, BOOM, only there was no joy in Mudtown. The turkey sailed off down the hill, and Mighty Casey hung his head in shame. Got on one more turkey that day w/ Coondog but we couldn't seal the deal. All in all. It was both the best and worst turkey hunting day of my life.

Nice story! Don't that just wake you up at night!!!!
Watched a big ol' gobbler last year the eve before season as he displayed with a few hens to within 35 yards of me. I watched him go to roost with the hens and at daylight I had the flintlock primed and ready for action. No gobbles at all that morning and around 10am I got a response. I yelped again and he had already closed the distance 50 yards, he must have been running! I was not in the best spot for a setup, but as fast as he was coming I got down behind some briars and yelped again, GOBBBBBBLE!!! He was almost on me, so I pulled the hammer back and in a few minutes there he was. He crested the hill about 25 yards from me and stopped. I really needed him a little closer as it is cylinder bore (yeah, I know).... He turned this way and that, then snapped his head up. I knew he had spotted me, so I took aim and let er' fly. At the shot he made a most impressive escape, rocketing out of the thicket like fighter jet and leaving me standing there with my mouth hanging open as the smoke drifted away.
THe toes of my boots were scuffed that morning as I kicked every tree on the way out!
goOD LUCK!
