I know this is a subject often discussed and has been on this forum, but I need some information about QDM to help manage a deer herd on a rather sizeable tract of property. I've read numerous articles and have spoke with several people on the subject, but thought it may be helpful to get some input about your experiences, success stories, types of foods planted, problems faced; you know, all general information.
My father-in-law and myself have recently been blessed enough to have unrestricted access to 2500+ acres of prime hunting land where we and only 3-4 other people have permission to even be on the property, much less hunt on it. The property has great potential. Huge bucks has come off of the property in the past and several are still around, not to mention that yesterday while hunting, I saw 40-45 deer in an hour and a half. And this was only on a small portion of the entire farm.
This property has not had any real hunting pressure in the past 25 years and has been used primarily for cattle. Somewhere around 50% of the property is fields, 35-40% is hardwood ridges and hollows, and the remainder is thickets(pine and briars). There is plenty of access to water(ponds and several flowing creeks).
Access to equipment and funds for seed, etc. is not a problem. The owner pretty much has all of that we should need.
Any information and advice would be qreatly appreciated.
