Also known as the American coffee berry, Kentucky mahogony, or stump tree. Quite a few of 'em along the Ky. River in Mercer Co.

The Kentucky Coffee Tree used to be our state tree for a long time, however, it is basically isolated to the Bluegrass region of the state. You may find one scattered around outside of the Bluegrass region, but they are not very common. Soooooo, the powers that be changed the state tree to the Tulip Poplar (which is much more evenly spread across the state), and named the Coffee tree the "State Heritage" tree.

They are rare, because the beans will kill livestock if eaten. All the farmers got rid of them quick.
