Just when you get all involved in discussions here and argue about crossbows, habitat, elk, grouse, and the agencies, something happens to remind you of what is really important.

My son is at Camp Lejeune, NC and he is a Marine. He called me tonight and told me that he got pulled from his unit today and was told he had been selected to go to Recon school. They want my 1st born boy to be a snake eater. Recon Marines are big time.

I am really proud, but why couldn't he just be in the Marine Corps band? I am too young to have a son prepping for war. This kind of stuff is for adults to deal witrh. Where's my dad?

I still remember him catching his first fish, shooting his first squirrels, rabbits, doves, turkey, and deer.

Prayers for him and all those thousands of others in harms way are appreciated.

It's because of folks like your son, that allow us to live the great lives we do. As a parent I know your concerned, but the pride has to be overwhelming.

Let's all remember our service men and women in our prayers.

ElkGuy,

Congrats for having a son serve and on his selection to Recon.

I know that you are proud of him for being selected and for being the man that he is and will become in the future.

With your support he will make it through the tough times that lie ahead of him in going to Recon school.

He will be in my prayers regardless...because he serves.

Elk Guy:

I salute your son for making the tough choice of serving in our military. We owe him and all soldiers our freedom. Make sure you tell him thanks from us. It seems like you did a pretty good job raising him also.

They chose the Marines for the helicopter because it is a Marine helicopter also known as Marine One.

They chose the MArines for the Helicopter for the same reason they chose them to personaly guard him. The Marines are the Presidents personal 911 force.

nothing better than recon

I believe Recon does not do Presidental detail. Yes, I was a Marine

Recon is special ops only. Security Forces does Presidential duty.

CPA, where did you do your tour?

congrats on the honor. I'm proud of him and all of our military personnel. I'll post another thread about a story my grandfather told me about the marines, but I won't hijack your thread with it. Again, congrats.

Phil,
I spent most of my time in Honduras and Italy as an Embassy Guard (MSG) Marine Security Guard. Got called back for Desert Storm, and saw no action, but I did see some interesting stuff in Central America. C. A. was a lot more fun and enjoyable than Europe.

How about you?

I didn't actually get off America soil. I was all over the West coast on multiple training exercises, and a couple hops on the east. Mainly out in California on Pendleton and in 29 Palms. I was "Combat Camera" so I got to go out with all different units and document them training, which is how I know a little about Recon. We were in 29 Palms together and did a couple sky rigging missions.

Thanks to everybody for their nice comments. I have been out of town for over a week, so I am just catching up.

I spoke with him on Sunday. He says he will go to recon school in June. If he survives that, he goes to SEAR school in Maine after that. Then scuba, airborne, etc etc.

I think he goes to CROSSBOW school after that. They want him to know how to use Weapons of Mass Destruction. (If I knew how to put one of those smartass smiling faces here I would do it right now).

Thanks again.

My prayers are with you. I just retired last month. First 11 years was with the Army Infantry last 9 was in the Army Recruiting Command. Its because of young men like your son that the old soldiers like me could go ahead and retire. Even though every day I wonder if I made the right decision. Keep us informed.

Just remember elkguy, your son will not be sent to do the job until he is one of the most highly trained in the world. I am sure he will be, and do just fine, but I will still say a prayer for him and all that serve.
