I saw one that was captured at Golden Pond in WKY. It was around 21-22".
Size of your wrist/forearm. It could have put a hurt on ya.

Got em all down here. Had one bite me one time fishing, good thing I had on waders. The fangs didn't go thru and the stupid thing was hung in the rubber. Talk about getting your leg out of a wader quickly!! Went back to the truck and got my shot gun and blowed snake and wader both to pices.
Didn't matter the wader was a little soiled anyway !:D

Non-poisonous snakes don't bother me at all, but that kind of stuff scares the crap out of me!! I don't need any poisonous snakes or spiders!!
I grew up near Murphy's Pond, which has to have the largest concentration of Cotton Mouths on God's green earth, & fished there frequently as a child, so I have seen a ton of them. The big ones tend to be very aggressive &, on more than one occasion, have provided me with motivation to put some yardage between me & them. Why do you ask, Kemo Sabe?

Seen lots of them on Tradewater. Them critters are in the Hendo bottoms also, seen a few during early woodie and teal season.
Biggest one I seen was on Tradewater just up from the mouth at what they call horse shoe bend. It was about 5.5' long, big around as a pop can and 1' from the boat. Ol Mr. Ruger gave him a very bad day.

In my 9 years of living on KY Lake every time someone shouted "cotton mouth" it turned out to be a banded water snake. The only ones I saw were at the Nature Center in LBL. I'm sure there are some around but not all that common. Copperheads are a different story. Those little suckers were just about everywhere.

When I was growing up, used to see them all the time arround the Tradewater, clear creek, weirs creek and strip mines. Here in Murray, about the only place I've been SURE of seeing one has been in the creek at Blood River.

I grew up in Wingo and duck hunted Murphy's pond before MSU took it over. I have seen them laying in the road down the big hill to get to the walkway that looked like logs. Made sure the windows were rolled up and the shot gun loaded.
On 1 ducking trip in Dec. we went to the blind we had in the back part of the pond and as the 1st guy climbed into the blind from the boat he was back out just as quick. There was a gaint cottonmouth coiled up on the bench and it was not too happy we had chose that afternoon to hunt there. Needless to say we had to repair the bench from a load of #4's going thru it.

Yep, Tradewater has cottonmouths. So does Lake Beshear, Pennyrile Lake, and any other lake or pond that comes in contact with Tradewater. The only snake to outnumber them around here is the danged Copperhead.
I remember there used to be lot of them around Lakes Hematite and Honkers. But that was before Barkley was built. I don't know about now.

As Joe mentioned, most reported sightings are common watersnakes which are harmless. I have personally never seen one, although I know there a few scattered around in different areas.
These pics came off the Corp property near KY Dam last summer.
