You could build one for alot less than a commercial cam and the quality and battery life is better. It isn't all that hard to build it yourself just take your time and have a little patience. The hardest part is taking the camera apart and trying to wire or hack it. But there are some cameras out there that you dont have to take the camera apart. Here is a couple that you just plug a stero jack into the outside of the camera Olympus 340/360.
In my opinion the best camera out there now is the Sony P32 and the P41. I have 2 of the P41s in the field and Im building to p32s as we speak. I also have a Olympus 370 that Im going to build as soon as I get the p32s done.
Once you start building your own, its like you cant stop its very addicting.
Let me know if you have any questions and I will be glad to help anyone out who wants to take the plunge on building there own setup.
If you guys have looked in Cabelas at the Penns wood trailcam it retails at $699 for a Sony P32. You could build it for around 200 to 250 depending what you pay for the camera.
