On the Hill
Sen. Inhofe Introduces Partners for Fish & Wildlife Act
Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus member and Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman James Inhofe (R-OK) introduced legislation on February 2 to authorize the Partners for Fish and Wildlife program administered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. S. 260, the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Act, would codify the highly successful program created by executive order in 1987 that provides matching grants for private landowners to restore fish and wildlife habitat on their own lands. Over the course of its existence, the program has entered over 33,000 agreements with landowners and restored millions of acres of wetlands, prairie and native grasslands or riparian habitat. Inhofe's bill would authorize spending up to $75 million a year for the program that received $33.6 million in 2004.

Administration
Bush Administration releases FY '06 Budget
On Monday February 7, the Bush administration unveiled a $2.57 trillion budget for fiscal year 2006 that cuts non-discretionary spending for non-defense or security related programs by close to 1 percent -- the first such cut since the Reagan presidency. Even with significant increases in Departments of Defense and Homeland Security spending, the federal budget would grow by only 2.1 percent -- a number lower than the rate of inflation. While some programs of interest to sportsmen and conservationists face proposed reductions, others including the North American Wetlands Conservation Act and the State Wildlife Grants program are targeted for increases. The budget request signals the beginning of the annual budget process - Congress will now debate the budget priorities through the annual appropriations process which will ultimately determine how much funding government programs receive. Support CSF through Taxes4Conservation
Did you ever think you'd be looking forward to tax season? OK we won't go that far but this year doing your taxes might be a little easier to swallow when you know that some of the cost of tax preparation is going to a good cause. The Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation and several of our friends in the conservation community have partnered with Frontier Tax Solutions to create the Taxes4Conservation program for the 2005 tax season. Taxes4Conservation works by allowing any individual to prepare and file their tax returns online at the Taxes4Conservation website for just $39.95. $10.00 of each return filed will be donated back to conservation through one of the eight conservation organizations that have joined in the partnership. Doing your taxes is never fun or easy, but we hope you'll take advantage of the simplicity of filing online this year through Taxes4Conservation. If you do, you'll know that you are helping an important cause. Go to http://www.taxes4conservation.com
to start your return!
