After a recent post of mine in the classifieds, it got me to thinking.
For those who have dropped some weight, How much, how, and how long did it take?
Me, I've done the Atkins for close to a year. (maybe longer)
I'd struggled for years before to drop the pounds, nothing worked. A buddy gave me a book written by Dr. Atkins, and I've been forever changed. I eat all the Food I want to eat.....(Meat) and don't have the carbs and sugar to bloat me or leave me sluggish.

Between 210 and 220 pounds in a little over a year and a half. Did my own diet of very strict calorie-counting (physician monitored), jogging, and walking. Completely new person, both physically and mentally. Now I have to figure out how to maintain.

WOW to you both! My mother in law and sister in law just had the gastric bypass and the sister in law is not doing so well. It probably has to do with her not following orders, but you guys prove it can be done with discipline! Congrats to you both. Wish I was disciplined enough top drop about 15 lbs!

Ya know there is only so much mass in the world & you cannot destroy it, only move it around. You guys keep losing it, but I found it. Quit it!!

went from 230 to 202 in 6 months. I hid mine really well, but I had the gut, and I hated it especially after seeing beach pictures from last summer.
Mild exercise (walking/running) plus CUTTING PORTIONS. Instead of eating 2 plate-fulls, eat 1 plate-full. A really good snack is pork rinds. They have 0 carbs. Also, only drink diet sodas and get rid of all those empty K-calories.
Smaller portions was really the key for me.

Congrats to everyone. I'm starting to get back in shape again. Not really overweight or anything, but just feel so much better when I am taking care of myself.

I have been fighting weight for about ten years. When my wife and I started dating I was 180, which is pritty skinny at 6'4". Now I am 296:eek: I have tried everything. Most I have lost is 40lbs with weight watchers. I liked Atkins because it kept me full but I did not like the side effects. Had to have my physical for work and my blood work came back questionable. So I went to my Dr. yesterday and he said it is possible that I may have diabetes. To make sure he put me on a aggressive diet with excercise and will recheck my blood work in 10 weeks.Hell of a day to have when you are only 29. Now I have extra incentive to put off the weight. Dr. said do it now for prevention or wait until I am 40 and start treating diabetes.

My dad did weight watchers/exercise. He went from about 220 to 175. I think he is about 5"10.

Sounds very similar to my situation. I was one step away from diabetes, and was developing high blood pressure and other problems. Your doctor did the same thing mine did - I gotta tell you it sure worked for me. There's no secret or magic formula for losing weight. All you gotta do is burn more calories than you take in each day. Easier said than done, but persistence over time is the key.
By the way my obesity was to the point my doctor told me I would be dead before my 40th birthday. Now THAT is a hell of a thing to hear.

on the STOMACH FLU DIET anybody want some ? kept me down for 3 days and going. I lost 50 pounds on adkins last year and then i gained 60 back when I went off the diet. its tough to lay off the sweets and warm yeast rolls. I think if a man could do the adkins to lose and then some balance diet afterward might be the ticket I think im going back on the adkins next week i need to lose about 50 before september!

AUK,
There is no better motivator when it comes to life or death. Two days now at 1500 calories each day...Boy have I been hungry. Today was better, I'm starting to space out my meals so the hunger is not as bad. Best thing is two days and seven pounds:D :D  .... Can't wait til fish'in starts. GET ME OUT OF THIS HOUSE!
Deadaim I think half of Lincoln co. has the flu now, including our family.

Congratulations! I started at 1500 a day, and eventually went down to about 800-900 a day (NOT recommended). If you are like me eventually you will get so used to being starved all the time that you won't notice it any more (seriously).
If I can offer some advice, make sure you eat SOMETHING three times a day, cause it really seems to make a difference to eat at regular intervals. Also, take vitamins daily. And turn the damn television off and find something else to do besides sitting on the couch - tv is the kiss of death for any diet. Go walk around Walmart if you have to. The people at my local Walmart probably think I'm a stalker of some sort by now. :p
If you end up cheating (and I guarantee you that you will), remember that tomorrow is another day. I'm pretty much a pro at dieting now, and I'm here to tell you the only secret to it is relentless, non-stop, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, DETERMINATION. For the rest of your life.
To lose weight and keep it off, you don't change your diet, you change your life. It sucks, but its the stone cold truth.

Since early November I have been excercising by walking a mile and a half every other day. Sometimes it's outside, sometimes inside on the treadmill.
I have simply made a few adjustments in what I eat.
I now eat no fast food at all other than Taco Bell for soft tocos without the cheese.
I have gone to eating complete whole wheat bread. No more white bread at all. No donuts, no fresh baked rolls except on a rare occasion. I've added a bit more fish in my diet, eating it twice per week. But I still have my beef and chicken.
I'm eating more rice than potatoes slathered in butter or gravy.
And where I used to drink two bottles of Mountain Dew a day, I have switched to calorie free Mountain Dew. I hated it at first but after about a week I got so used to it that regular Mountain Dew is sickingly sweet.
I'm losing weight like I should. About a pound a week. I've dropped 22 pounds, and I feel much better. I was 245 pounds and 6 feet tall. I want to get down to 180.
Maintaining the weight will be easy because I simply am eating differently and I will maintain that more healthy diet into the future.
Atkins Diets, Weight Watchers, All of these "fad" diets will help you lose weight fast but when you stop you will gain it back even faster.
Eating healthy and not feeling starved, along with exercise, is the key.
I've gotten rid of my sleep apena just by losing the weight I have so far.
And here's another plus. I quit smoking at the same time I started my diet. Now there's a challange!

Thanks for the advice AUK. I have found that I have to get off my butt. Each day seems a little better. Spacing those three meals have been the biggest help. That later in the day I can eat my last meal the better off I am on cheating. Late night is when my worst cravings hit and a late dinner takes the edge off.
Thanks again.
