Had a very lucky day today hunting some bunnies. We were well on our way to our third limit when the chase on one suddenly stopped. We aaited for a few minutes, thinking the rabbit must have holed.
Then on of the hounds barked, but it sounded muffled and a lot different that it had been. Thinking the dogs was in a hole or caught in a fence or something, we went closer and soon found the problem.
2 of the 5 dogs had fell or went into an open well and were bobbin up and down in the frigid water, barely able to keep their heads up. I could barely reach the dogs and quickly snatched them out. Both were shivering and could hardly stand, wobbling and very weak. We ended up carrying them to the truck, because they were shot for the day. After warming up in the box, they appeared to completly recover. We were worried they might be scared to hunt any more, but they still ate a rabbit head apeice when we cleaned the rabbits later. We considered a lucky day. Couldn't tell if the rabbit went into the well. If he did, he sunk before we got there.

You lucked out!!There's probobly been several dogs lost that way and you woundn't know what happened to them. There's a well where I hunt that's about 20 ft deep. It's covered with hedge apple and briars.I hunted there for 3 years before I found it.It'S dry,but the dog probobly wouldn't survive the fall.

You guys were lucky. There are so many troubles those little beagles get into by following their noses. That hole was not in area 12 was it???????????????????

You are right on how much trouble a little beagle can get into following his nose. Years ago my family operated a furniture manufacturing plant in McLean Co. One day at lunch when everything was quiet in the finishing department, someone heard a dog bark. Investigating they found that a dog (turned out to be a small beagle), had entered a tile pipe that went completing under the
building. It was about midway across a 150 foot span and couldn't be seen. When my father arrived on the scene he determined where the dog was, called in the jack hammer and went through about a foot of concrete to retreive a trapped beagle. It was good thing it wasn't under a drying oven because I don't think Dad would have moved one to get to the floor. That tile was not much bigger then 6 inch's. He was
lucky Dad was a hunter and liked dogs.

I covered two wells last year. We have the same problem in this area.

Nope, it was on the farm next to mine in Grayson co. We have 3 wells on our farm, but didn't know this one was there. It was covered with honeysuckle.

See there Tom, all your deer food plot work has not been for nothing -- at least you have a healthy rabbit population.[;)]

Yep...I hate to think of the thousands I've spent on that place. If my wife knew, see croak. Come to think of it, I might just tell her.
The PLB said we have a great place for a variuos forms of wildlife.
But I really couldn't care less about songbirds, field mice, moles, and what ever else the place is host too. We're trying to atract deer. But I'll have to admit, we have made some progress. I killed a good buck this year, and that's the first one that we've killed since I've owned it. We have taken a few does(not many). Right now, there sems to be several deer living on the place. I saw places where I could kill one fairly easy while we were hunting it the other day. And the turkeys are doing great. It's hard with only 94 acres to get anything consistantly big though. That's why I lease. I hope that works better than the last place too!

Yep! Working it out now. Should be better than what we had, except there ain't any Clubhouse. I'll holler and take you out there for a rabbit hunt sometime.
