I know that doves love wheat, but in the past, when I have let the wheat stand until dove season I've had poor results. It has been flatened by deer and turkey. It had poor seed production and didn't hold what seed it did produce. The seed I used was just $5.oo per 50lb bag, cover crop wheat.Should I use a differant, more expensive seed,or maybe more fertilizer,or maybe the timing of the fertilizer was wrong?I would like to use this, allready established plot, for dove hunting in Sept. That would free up some time this spring for me to do other habitat work.Anybody have any experiance on this???

For doves I would probably use a combo of sunflowers & millet.

I've planted just about everything for dove.I've been doing this for several years.Foxtail millet works best.I don't want to plow and disc.I want to use what I allready have. The wheat was planted last fall.

The cover crop wheat that u mention is not meant to have a large production of seed, it's meant to be used as a ground cover/protection during the winter and then turned over in the Spring when something else is planted. At least that's my understanding.
