Are you talking just a regular digital camera, or a trail camera with a digital camera in it?

just a normal camera, only digital to take pics of mounts and such. :)

I got an Oylmpus 410 a couple of months back. Around $350. Its 4 megapixil and waterproof for the most part(Not for underwater pics though) Guy told me the nice thing about "waterproof" is the extra seals keep the DIRT out, which is what kills a camera.(Thats what he said- I am no expert). Camera came with rechargable battery(and charger). USB cable and software for computer hook-up, as well as a32MB picture card. It will also take mini-moves. Also has a slient mode which is nice in the woods. Zoom is 3X. Is small enough to hang around my neck inside my shirt and shoot my bow.

whatever you get, make sure it has rechargeable batteries and go ahead and get an extra set so you always have one in reserve. Mine uses AA's and it eats batteries like I eat biscuits! Also don't get anything under 3 megapix. The high resolutions have come way down in price and it's worth it for the higher quality. I have some 8x10's that I ptinted from mine and they are Awesome! Get the highest optical zoom you can afford and don't worry about the digital zoom. It's a worthless gimic used to sell cameras.

My girlfriend has a 3.1 megapixel, with a combined 10X zoom. Everyone says that the digital zoom doesn't do anything for you, but when you have plenty of pixels, the pictures look just fine using the digital zoom as well, as long as there is an autofocus on the camera. I am looking into getting one that has a 20X or more combined zoom, but I also won't get one if it's under 3 megapixel, and since it would have so much zoom on it, I would probably consider 4 or more. But if you aren't planning on using it for outdoor stuff much, then 3 would be fine, and you can find nice ones now for under $200, and they usually come with a free memory card now too. Batteries don't last long, so make sure you have plenty of the rechargeable kind around.

SixPack07 the reason people say digital zoom doesn't do anything for you is because if you took the picture with maximum optical zoom and then put the picture on your computer and zoomed in then you are doing the same thing. Using digital zoom only lowers the quality of your original digital image which is something you never want to do. I hope the way I said that makes sense.

It's sort of like cropping the picture, and enlarging it, while you take the picture. Then you don't have to mess around with it in a photo program. And the ones I have used, look better using the digital zoom, because it focuses the picture, so it is clear. If you crop and blow up, you can lose the quality. I know you still lose some quality with the digital zoom, but I don't think it is that bad, maybe it would be with more zoom.

I got a HP 635 from wallmart for $150, The darn thing even takes short movies with sound,,, I like it,, Stay under 3 mp unless you want to print out a 8X10 picture, I still have to reduce the resolution to put them on my web page or on e mail or it takes forever to download ,, on both end's,,
You will need a memory card, I think it only take's bout 30 in the good mode with out one, , It has 3 modes,, I never tried the other two,, I might some day,, It's 2.1 mp with a 12x zoom
rechargeable batteries and a charger is a must !! they do eat batteries,,

hobbles, try the lower quality mode if you are never gonna print large photos. If I'm taking pics of stuff that will only be posted on here, ebay, or emailed then I use the lowest quality setting on the camera. I think it is .3 mp. It takes a great pic still that can be printed to 4x6 and still be crystal clear. I would still get the highest resolution cam I could afford just so I have more options.

Get the best camera you can afford, you can never have too much zoom, or megipix. Eventually, you will be glad you went ahead and spent the extra money.

As everyone said, get as much as you can afford. But, I can tell you, you don't need anything more than 4 MP. If I were looking, get a 4 with 6x Zoom or more. I have a 2.1 MP with 6x zoom and a 4.1 MP with 3x zoom and I miss the 6x zoom. If you use non rechargable batteries, make sure you use the Photocell or E3 or something designed for the new electronics out. I have 3 sets of rechargables and 3 flash cards so I am always ready.
I have a Sony Cyber-shot 5.1 mega pixel. It only has a 3x zoom. My other one that I had messed up on me so I got this one free. I did have a 4.o maega pixel with a 6x zoom. I really like my new camera. It is small and easy to use, but I wish I had the 6x zoom back.:(

You can check overstock.com too. They usually have a bunch of digital cameras for cheaper, and a lot to choose from. Give you a starting point on what megapixel/zoom combos you can get and for what prices before you hit the stores.

I think most electronics are like that. Some will work for 30 years, and others of the same product go to crap in 3 months.

I wasn't intending any harm in what I said. I just meant that I don't understand how one product will work fine for years, and another guy can take the same product, from the same shelf, and half it go to crap in 3 months. You think they would make them all the same and they should work and last the same. But they are just careless and trying to make a profit. I wasn't trying to say anything bad about what you said.

Glad it's working for ya, the ones we had tore up in no time atall. I have a 620 HP that I carry hunting and everywhere, I love it! It has been fallen on by my big self, dropped, left a couple of days in a wet hunting coat and usually stays in my hunting truck which has seen single digit weather lately. It still carries on well.

Does anyone have an Olympus Camedia C-725 Digital Camera? I was looking at getting on because they have it for $200 right now, with a free memory card and printer to go along with it. It has 8x optical and 3x digital, but only 3 megapixels, so I was curious to how the pictures looked all the way zoomed in, with not a lot of megapixels.

Three megapixels will be plenty for you.

I'm going to stop and look at it tonight, to see if they have it out where you can mess around with it. I figure I'm not going to be blowing the pictures up real big anyway, so I thought they should turn out fine. Just would be nice for those times when you see something far off and wish you had a better camera.

3 MP = film quality. So anything 3.0 & up should be fine. I have a Canon A80 4.0 MP. It takes great photos. I have a Sony P=41 on the way to build a trail cam out of. I have heard that 3.2 can be blown up to 8x10 fine without much quality lost.

My girlfriend has a 3.1 MP, and we can connect it to the TV, and on the full TV screen they still look perfect. My only concern was that zooming in the full 24x zoom, might start to lose the detail. I stopped in to look at the camera, and of course it had dead batteries in the display, and I didn't have time to find someone to change them for me, so I'm hoping I can check it out Friday.
