I havn't been coon hunting in almost 10 years (since I was about 13) and even then I always went with a friend of mine that had some dogs, but I never had any of my own. I've been thinking about getting back into hunting the furry bandits, but I don't really have the budget, or the time to mess with dogs right now. I've got a coon call, and I was wondering if anyone has ever had any luck just trying to call the coons to them? If so what seems to be the best method? And when's the best time to go?

You say you have a "coon call?" If you mean a squawler, they are used to call a coon out of a den tree or to make the coon look at the light. Sounds like a coon when fighting. I've never heard of calling a coon to you. I always thought that listening and training the dogs was the real sport and purpose of coon hunting, but that's just me.

Coons will look at a squealer long enough for you to kill them. And you can call them with a fox caller or any other call enough for them to look at you long enough to kill them. Don't know how much fun that would be or how legal it would be. It would strictly a night time deal and you have to use a light to shin the coon.
