Can someone here tell me what kinds of traps are used for beaver and how they work? We have some beaver we need to trap...they are getting trees up by the house! ... but I am worried about my dogs getting in the traps. Are the traps placed under water or on the shore? And how do they work?

If you use steel traps to catch beaver. You will need to set a drowning set that will drown the beaver. If you tie one end of the set solid the beaver will chew its foot off and will not be in the trap when you run it. I am not sure the beaver will bleed to death even though it chews its foot off. It would probably depend weather or not it gets it's front or back foot in the trap. And how much of the foot it gets in it. Their back feet are allot bigger than the front and it will bleed more if it chews the back one off. There is a little device called a Thompson drowner that can be attached to a steel trap & about 10 feet of bailing wire and a ancor. That you can make a drown set out of. And when the beaver gets into this set and heads for the water. It will not be able to turn back to the bank and it will drown if the set is set right and in deep enough water. You can also tear a large hole in top of their den before dark and they will try to repair the hole during the night. But if you slip up quitely enough to look down into the hole. You usually can get a shot at one of them before they slide off into the water.
