I scouted two farms in the snow and didn't see a single turkey track. I did see some coyote tracks in my bottoms. I bought a dying rabbit call and set out saturday afternoon. On my third set up a yote ran across the field about 300 yards away, I didn't get a shot. I kept calling and about 30 minutes later he came back in about 175 yards off in the woods. I hit him just in front of his shoulder low in the neck. The boy with the call is my oldest Briar, Hunter is holding the gun. It was a 25# male.

Next time aim for the gut. gut shot coyotes will often call in another one.

Thanks,

I shot it on my farm in Butler County with a Rugar #1 in 22-250. The yote did hollar some before it passed. I took my little cousin deer hunting the last weekend during gun season. He is 14 and had not took a deer yet. We were in a ground blind and as soon as we shut the door a yote ran across the food plot. I did't have time to get a shot. Later Cody took a 75# doe that came in just before dark with a doe and button buck. He is still talking about that hunt. So I decided to try coyote hunting down there.

I can't wait untill the boys are old enough to hunt with me. I have taken Briar with me squirell hunting once. I have got them both BB guns and Briar has just started being able to hit a can by himself. They both could cast a button type fishing pole by 2.5 years old. Now if I can get them to bait the hook and remove the fish.

I'm new to this board and no one asked for my oppinion, but I think that Multidigit's advice to "shoot for the gut" is poor direction for anyone to give. Much less someone who carries the designation of "Moderator."

Let me qualify my thoughts. First of all, I am very much in favor of hunting and am an avid coyote hunter. However, I think that we have a moral obligation to attempt to dispatch any type of game animal as humainly as possible.

Further, this type of irresponsible comment is just the kind of fuel the anti-hunting crowd would love to make hay with. Goodness knows that they are capable of making a very big stink from far more innocent comments than this one.

Not trying to start something. Actually trying to prevent something from getting way out of hand.

On a more positive note, Gates, you've got a very nice coyote there and you're very lucky to have boys who are enjoying the outdoors and the shooting sports. I think it's an almost invaluable thing that a father can do for his kids when he introduces them to hunting. I hope the three of you have many more great hunts.
