I've been looking at the Indiana regulations and have a few questions. I used to hunt up there in the mid 90's and had to have both a 'hunting' liscense and a deer hunting firearms tag to gun hunt. I bought a 5 day nonresident hunting permit and my archery tag last year, but after looking at the reg's online, I can't find anything that says I need the 'hunting' liscense in addition to the firearms or archery tag.... Is this correct????

Also, I saw something about a transportation permit. What is that about? I'm going to bow hunt in Northern Kentucky next week and then head to my sisters in Indiana for the gun opener. If I'm successful here in KY, I'll have to take the deer with me up there to process it and get ready for their gun season. Do I have to fill out a transport tag or something for that????

Thanks!

You don't need a standard hunting license in addition to your deer license. The hunting license is for small game and such. I am not sure how the transportation permit works.

S.Pace before your animal is taken into the state you have to debone the animal even if you are or are not the processor. This goes for deer or elk, CWD is still on the minds of a lot of people.

Thanks Steve! Seems like I read that in the reg. manual. That's a lot of work for you all that live in Indiana and hunt here in Kentucky.............

The only license you need to hunt deer in Indiana is a "Archery Tag" if you bow hunt, a "Firearm Tag" for shotgun, handgun, or muzzleloader, and "Muzzleloading Tag" for our December M/L only deer season which runs with late bow season. The Hunter is issued a Transportation tag and must report their Deer harvest at a check station within 48 hours after kill. I wish we could just phone in our deer like you Guys do in Kentucky.

Not true--you need both a NR hunting license and a weapon specific deer tag for each deer you want to harvest.

Multidigits,

No, one does not need a general hunting license along with their deer license. Here in Indiana the IDNR offers RESIDENT Deer Tags and Non-RESIDENT Deer Tags. Costs are : NR- $140 and Res.- $24 for each tag purchased. Example if you have a general "buck only" tag it will run the above costs for both. You may purchase an additional anterless (Bonus) tag in counties where this applies. You may also purchase a M/L tag regardless if you already harvested a Deer, but if you got a Buck during the Bow or Firearm season you can only take an anterless Deer during the December M/L season. Same applies for Archery.

Multi,

Hoosier5 is entirely correct…however, this has just been changed in the last couple of years! It USED to be that a KY resident had to purchase an Annual Non-Resident (General) Hunting License & the corresponding deer tag (Early Archery, ML, Modern Firearms, etc.) as this is what IN residents had to purchase in KY. Not exactly sure when they changed it, but they do now offer Non-resident Deer tags ($120.75) just as Hoosier stated. If you have other questions, or need further clarification, the IN DeerHotline # (8:30AM-4:30PM M-F) is (812) 334-3795.

You can buy licenses online now at:

Here is the link for a temporary transportation tag should you buy online:

Here is the NEW reg’s for out-of-state deer:

NEW REGULATION
Out-of-State Deer
Because little is known scientifically about how Chronic
Wasting Disease (CWD) is spread, bringing the carcasses
and/or parts of deer and other cervids harvested out-ofstate
is strictly limited by Indiana State Board of Animal
Health rules. Only the following may be brought into Indiana:
• De-boned meat
• Commercially processed meat, which may contain bone
• Carcasses or parts of carcasses with the head or spinal
column attached delivered, within 72 hours after entering
Indiana, to a meat processor inspected by the BOAH
• Antlers, including antlers attached to skull caps, cleaned
of all brain and muscle tissue
• Hides
• Upper canine teeth
• Heads delivered within 72 hours after entering Indiana,
to a taxidermist licensed by the Indiana Department of
Natural Resources
• Finished taxidermist mounts.
For up-to-date information on CWD and the state’s
prevention and monitoring program visit: www.wildlife.IN.gov.

Hoosier 5 and Multididgits,

That is my understanding as well, although I am not an expert on non-resident requirements for Indiana. If I am wrong, I appologize.

Kentucky residents NEED to buy both a deer tag and a NR Hunting license to hunt in Indiana.

Multi,

Sorry, but you're wrong...on this one. I even called the DNR to confirm!!! Feel free to call the hotline and verify...

If this is true and the policy has changed, does that mean that the Indiana and Kentucky non-resident fees are basically equal now? I have read on here a lot of people saying that Indiana charges way more than KY for non-residents, is that then no longer the case? I pay 140 dollars for a license and tag for KY.
